Apprenticeships and Shadow Studies

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre offers two exciting programs for high schoolers in grades 10-12 to explore dance and arts administration careers.

Shadow Study—This one-day program allows a student to tailor their experience to their area of interest:

  • artistic (dancing and choreography),
  • production (stage managing and design),
  • or arts administration (Marketing, Development, or Education).

Students will shadow a person in their area of interest during a typical workday, helping with tasks and experiencing first-hand the dedication and energy that goes into creating a high-quality and successful arts organization.

“Everyone we talked to was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I’m so glad they took time to talk with us during their busy day!” ~Shadow Study participant, 2009-10

Apprenticeship Program—This extended version of our Shadow Study gives students exposure to all areas of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre: artistic, production and arts administration. The program includes six visits to PBT: Four in-studio half days from 9 am - 12 pm and attendance at two performances. Students participating in the Apprenticeship Program will learn about the history of PBT, the different departments and their responsibilities within the organization and even take a basic ballet class (no dance experience necessary)! The Apprenticeship Program will culminate in the student-driven final projects.
