Getting to Know Casey
Casey Taylor has been a professional dancer with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre since the 2011-12 season.
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
Number of years as a dancer: 15
Training: I attended the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School and Pacific Northwest Ballet's Professional Division.
First Professional Job: Guesting in the corps de ballet of Swan Lake with the Dresden Semperoper Ballet.
Other Jobs: Performing in The Nutcracker with Pennsylvania Ballet.
Favorite Role: Giselle and the tall girl lead in Rubies are both roles I dream of dancing someday.
Favorite Choreographer: I love George Balanchine's works. It's amazing how musical every movement is. I also always enjoy watching Petit Mort by Jiri Kilyan but I haven't seen any of his other works.
Pittsburgh's Best Kept Secret: The PBT! But, of course, that's no secret :-)
Last Movie You Saw: The Lorax. It was one of my favorite books growing up.
What magazines do you read? SPIN magazine, and I like to treat myself to magazines like People or US when I travel.
What three people from any time or place would you invite to dinner? My two sisters. The three of us haven't all been in the same place for the longest time.
Greatest influence: I am influenced every day by my peers and co-workers. Even some days by complete strangers. I use inspiration as my motivation.
Favorite thing about dance: I love the different levels it has. It is physical, technical, artistic, emotional, musical, driving, thought-provoking and inspiring. When I see a dancer with all of those qualities, I am speechless.
Favorite television shows: How I Met Your Mother, Glee, New Girl and Dance Moms.
Other interests besides ballet: Cooking, photography
Future plans: I intend to continue dancing as long as I can, and hopefully to be a principal ballerina. Once my ballet career is over, I hope to open up a restaurant or start my own business.
Advice to students: Keep believing in yourself. There will be times where you feel like there is so much piled against you, but if you stay strong and persevere, your dreams will come true. Mine did. :-)
