Over the course of his career – and his life – Giselle has been a touchstone of sorts for Principal Dancer Christopher Budzynski.
It was one of two top ballets he revered as a youngster. It was the first ballet he performed as a professional. It was the first time he performed a pas de deux with his wife, fellow Principal Dancer Alexandra Kochis.
PBT to Unveil New Scenic and Costume Designs; Orchestra to Revive Original Adam Score
Three days before Halloween, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre opens its 47th season with a story of haunting beauty: “Giselle” with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Orchestra, onstage Oct. 28-30, at the Benedum Center.
Victoria Watford, of Cleveland, Ohio, joins the company from the PBT School Graduate Program, where she has trained since 2014. Prior to PBT, Watford trained with the Cleveland School of Dance for more than 10 years and performed with Cleveland Youth Ballet Company in “Diamonds,” “Don Quixote,” “The Nutcracker” and other works.
Starting with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday and ending with a full day of open house festivities on Sunday, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre welcomed over 900 people into its newly expanded studios for the Grand Opening of the new Byham Center for Dance. Three months of elementary dance classes at the tender age of four and attendance at a handful of ballets are the sum of experience I brought to observe company class at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. For dancers, class is a daily ritual to wake up their muscles and prepare them for the day. Throughout the 1.5-hour class, I asked myself questions like: How do they lift their legs so high? What are they doing with their hands? Where do they find the energy to do this every single day? What purpose do these stretches serve? The musicality of the dancer’s movements entranced me.
Byham Center for Dance to Open in September; Kickstart New Community Classes
Starting in September, Liberty Avenue passersby will be able to see into Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s new studios from the street – a design feature that’s symbolic of the company’s mission to welcome more people inside.
