Program Notes

In Swan Lake, Odette is a young woman who has been transformed into a swan by a sorcerer’s curse. Early in the ballet, Prince Siegfried comes upon her by a lake, and in this pas de deux she expresses her sorrow, fear and ultimately, her strength. From Siegfried “unfolding” Odette at the start of the pas, to the succession of split lifts timed perfectly with the music, to the ballerina’s fluid, swan-like arm movements, this is one of the most beautiful and moving pas de deux in classical ballet.
