The “Company Experience” Workshop

Join PBT Artistic Faculty, company members and special guests for an exclusive preview of the life of a professional dancer.

Newly Envisioned Company Experience Program!

  • “Company Experience” 2022 culminates with a main-stage outdoor performance alongside PBT Principal dancers at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheater on June 26 as part of their 2022 Summer Concert Series, open to the public
  • Workshop dancers will be cast in repertoire and choreography through an audition process on the first day of the program.
  • Variations may be sent to registered dancers prior to arrival to be presented during the casting process.
  • Daily class followed by six hours of rehearsal.
  • Coaching from Susan Jaffe and PBT dancers.
  • New choreography by guest Rika Okamoto
  • Contemporary repertoire and new choreography by guest Alexander Brady
  • Learn traditional, contemporary and new choreography from PBT company dancers and artistic staff in alignment with PBT Company repertoire
  • Repertoire will be announced prior to arrival for the program
  • Dancers in the “Company Experience” program may be considered by Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Artistic Director Susan Jaffe for apprentice positions with PBT company.
  • Complements our Intensive Summer Program and other ballet summer intensive training programs.

Dancers from all across the country and world are invited to audition for three exceptional programs – the Intensive Summer Program, “Company Experience” Workshop and year-round Pre-professional Division Program. Students are able to audition in-person, via Zoom or submit a video audition.

Please note that all participants in our 2022 summer will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the start of their program. We are unable to accommodate exemptions from vaccination during this this program.

Artistic Team:*

ESTEEMED GUEST FACULTY:

Alexander Brady – Alex trained at the Boston School of Ballet and the School of American Ballet before dancing professionally with the Joffrey Ballet, Miami City Ballet and Twyla Tharp Dance. On Broadway, he was an original cast member of “Movin’ Out”, “The Time’s They Are a-Changin”” and “Come Fly Away”, all directed and choreographed by Tharp. Mr. Brady has also danced with Mark Morris Dance Group, The Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Dances Patrelle, the Houston Grand Opera, and in the films “Across the Universe” and “Julie and Julia”. Mr. Brady has staged Tharp repertory for dance companies worldwide, and as a guest teacher has taught technique and repertory at Barnard College, the Laban Institute, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, and Indiana University among others, and served three years as Company Manager for Twyla Tharp Dance. He has choreographed works for UNCSA, St. Paul’s School Ballet Company, Concord Academy, and Pittsburgh Ballet Theater School’s Company Experience. In addition to co-directing the dance department at Concord Academy with his partner, Rika Okamoto, Mr. Brady is also teaching at the Boston Ballet School and Walnut Hill School of the Arts.

Rika Okamoto – Rika Okamoto’s dance career expands from 1990 through 2017, including working with companies such as Martha Graham Dance Company (1992-1999) and Twyla Tharp (1993, 2001-2017).  She has appeared as an original cast in Tharp’s Broadway shows (Movin’ Out and Come Fly Away), Disney’s Broadway musical Tarzan, TV documentaries, award shows, commercials, prints, and films including Across the Universe directed by Julie Taymor.  She was selected for the covers of Dance Magazine in 2010 and 2015. She also worked as a rehearsal director, director of education, administrator, production coordinator, and archivist at Twyla Tharp Dance Foundation. She has been teaching at numerous dance institutions and universities worldwide since 1994.  She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of the Art in Philadelphia, PA, a Yoga Alliance 500 hour advance teacher certification, and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher certification at the Mindfulness Center at Brown University

Tuition & Housing

Tuition & Housing:

Tuition: $1490

A $500 non-refundable tuition deposit, applicable towards total tuition, is required with completed registration form. The balance of program tuition will be required of all students registering for the workshop and may be paid in full or in installments.

Housing: $1,190

Supervised dormitory housing is available at Chatham University. A $500 non-refundable housing deposit, applicable towards total housing, is required with completed registration if housing is needed. Housing cost includes room, meal plan, laundry and transportation for excursions. Housing is limited and awarded on a first-come basis upon acceptance to enrolled students, who have submitted the non-refundable housing deposit. The balance of program tuition will be required of all students registering for the workshop and may be paid in two installments.

PBT School recognizes that housing availability may change depending on the state of the pandemic in 2022 and what we determine is a safe option for students. PBT School reserves the right to modify housing arrangements based on the needs of the program.

Our planning continues to be informed by guidance from local, state and federal public health authorities, as well as applicable orders and regulations from the governor and relevant federal agencies. Given the evolving nature COVID-19 recommended guidance, please understand that we will be constantly responding to continuing developments. Updates will be communicated by email and through our website. We all must commit to the actions and precautions we can take as individuals to protect our PBT community. It will require all of us to show care for their friends, peers, colleagues and neighbors to keep our community healthy.
