Dance Medicine Professionals Converge in Pittsburgh

Last week, more than 400 members of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science converged on Pittsburgh for a three-day meeting focusing on improving clinician care for dancers. The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre family could not have been more thrilled to participate.

First, more than 100 meeting attendees filled PBT Studios on Thursday to observe PBT dancers in working rehearsals for the company’s intensely phyiscal season opener, Mixed Repertory #1, onstage Oct. 23-25, at the Benedum.

Then on Friday, PBT Artistic Director Terrence S. Orr helped kick off the main IADMS meeting with the keynote welcome speech. Several other PBT representatives presented throughout the  event, including Christina Salgado, PBT’s director of education and community engagement, and members of the UPMC Sports Medicine team, which cares for PBT’s company dancers.

Here, three PBT presenters share their insights on this advancing medical field:

Valerie Williams, physical therapist
Christina Salgado, PBT education director
